"Rachel Getting Married" Oscar nominee Anne Hathaway has been tapped to star in the film and stage adaptations of the story of iconic performer Judy Garland."Get Happy: The Life Of Judy Garland" will be produced on stage and screen by The Weinstein Company."Get Happy," which is based on hundreds of interviews plus Garland's own unfinished and unpublished autobiography, portrays the dramatic highs and lows of the cultural icon's life -- from her tumultuous early years as a child performer to her tragic last days."We are thrilled to have the brilliantly talented Anne Hathaway portray stage and screen legend Judy Garland," said Harvey Weinstein, who made the announcement Tuesday. "Gerald Clarke's biography is a fascinating and comprehensive look at Garland's life and is particularly outstanding because of its exclusive details from her own writings. Her story is incredible subject matter for both theater and film and we look forward to bringing it to audiences.""Get Happy: The Life Of Judy Garland" was first published by Delta in March 2001.Hathaway follows in the footsteps of her mother, Kate McCauley, a stage performer who played the role of Fantine in the first national tour of "Les Miserables."Hathaway began her acting training in theater. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and raised in Milburn, N.J., she was the first teenager ever accepted into New York City's The Barrow Theatre Company, and has trained extensively as a soprano. It was not announced if she would sing in her role as Ms. Garland.Hathaway was thrust into the mainstream spotlight after her appearance in "The Princess Diaries" for Walt Disney Studios in 2001. In 2004, she starred in another romantic fantasy, "Ella Enchanted," and reprised her role as Mia Thermopolis in "Princess Diaries 2."This year, she received her first Oscar nomination -- for Best Actress -- for her role as a recovering addict in "Rachel Getting Married."In a recent interview, Hathaway said she would relish a musical role. She will also be returning to stage this summer in the Shakespeare in the Park production of "Twelfth Night.""I have worked with Anne on projects in the past and have known her for many years. She will be a true class act in this challenging role," said Weinstein.
