Group Goes To Extremes To Save On Gas

Member Says You Can Get Better Mileage, Too

Friday, April 18, 2008 – updated: 8:15 am PDT April 18, 2008

As the price of gas continues to reach record highs, one Cincinnati-area group is taking things into their own hands and changing they way they drive, television station WLWT reported.

'Hyper-Milers' Go Extreme To Save Gas

They call themselves hypermilers. The group goes to extreme efforts to get the best gas mileage possible.

Jud Engels is part of the group. He has a hybrid car that he customized with aerodynamic hub cabs, an internal antenna to cut down on drag, and an onboard computer that monitors engine performance. But, you don't have to do the same thing to save at the pump.

"Actually, the people that have regular cars can turn out better percentage performance than the hybrids do," said Engels.

There are a few tricks to increase your gas mileage, like maintaining proper tire pressure, and keeping the windows up and the air conditioning off.

But hypermilers also try to stay in constant motion because stopping and starting uses extra gas. They try to time traffic lights, avoid left turns, and avoid braking when it is safe. They even park near slopes, so they can just throw the car in gear and roll away without hitting the gas.
