A cat survived a 14-mile ride near a car's engine and is now available for adoption from a California animal shelter.

The Los Angeles Times reported that a woman drove from Anaheim to Irvine last month before realizing there was a strange noise coming from under the hood of the car.

After popping the hood, she saw a cat wedged into a compartment behind a headlight staring at her.

A veterinarian from the Irvine Animal Care Center was called in to rescue the cat, which happened after she was able to sedate the cat and use dishwashing soap to make it easier for the cat to be removed.

"He's a very lucky cat, and he's such a sweetheart, so friendly," Jennifer Shively, a shelter employee, told the Los Angeles Times. Shelter officials said black cats often have a hard time finding a home because they are usually associated with bad luck.

The cat's owners failed to show up to pick up their lost cat, so workers at the shelter named the cat "Miles" in honor of the improbable 14-mile journey.
