However, Louganis' run to back-to-back golds was not without incident. The American hit the back of his head on the board during the preliminary round of the springboard event, causing a gash that needed four sutures to close. On the vault, the final rotation, Strug injures her ankle on her first attempt. But despite the injury, the 18-year-old returns to perform her second vault, which appears to clinch the gold for the American squad, although it is later determined that the squad would have won without Strug's heroics. During the medal ceremony, Strug -- whose ankle is wrapped in a soft cast -- is carried out to the medal stand by coach Bela Karolyi.In the Olympic debut of women's soccer, the U.S. team defeats China in the final to win gold. American Greco-Roman wrestler Rulon Gardner, who grew up on a dairy farm in Wyoming, entered the gold-medal match a heavy underdog. His opponent, Russian Aleksandr Karelin, entered the 2000 Olympics trying to become wrestling's first four-time Olympic champion and remain undefeated in his 13-year international career. But Karelin's resume couldn't defeat Gardner, who won the match in overtime. Gardner followed up his gold with a bronze at the 2004 Athens Games, where he left his shoes on the mat following his match, demonstrating his retirement from the sport.Australian swimmer Ian Thorpe, known as the "Thorpedo," wins two golds in one night at the 2000 Sydney Games. The 17-year-old won the 400m freestyle in world-record time and then led Australia to a victory over the Americans in the 4x100m freestyle relay.2004 Athens Games
Michael Phelps falls short in his attempt to match Mark Spitz's mark of seven gold medals in a single Games, but he ties the record for most medals at a single Olympics when he hauls in eight jewels at the Athens Games. The American swimming star won six golds (200m IM, 400m IM, 100m butterfly, 200m butterfly, 4x200m freestyle relay and the 4x100m medley relay) and two bronzes (200m freestyle and 4x100m freestyle relay).Carly Patterson becomes the second U.S. women's gymnast -- and the first since Mary Lou Retton in 1984 -- to win the all-around gold.Paul Hamm becomes the first American to win the men's Olympic all-around title. However, his victory is marred by controversy. Bronze medalist, South Korea's Yang Tae-Young, claims there was a scoring error during his parallel bars routine that cost him the title. Officials acknowledged the error, but the results are not overturned. Yang appealed the decision, but the Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled against him in October 2004.
