Omaha, NE -- (Sports Network) - Dara Torres dropped the 100-meter freestyle from her Olympic program, instead choosing to race in the 50 free plus the 400- meter freestyle relay in Beijing. The 41-year-old Torres won both the 50 and 100 at the Olympic trials last week. The mother of a two-year-old daughter clinched a spot in her unprecedented fifth Olympics. Because Torres chose to drop the 100, Lacey Nymeyer, who finished third at the trials, will move into her spot. It's been an incredible Olympic run for Torres, winner of nine medals, starting with a relay gold in 1984 in her current home city of Los Angeles, and most recently capturing four medals in 2000 -- this after coming out of a seven-year retirement. Not only that, but last November Torres had surgery to remove a bone spur responsible for a partial rotator cuff tear in her right shoulder. She also had surgery on her knee in January.
Torres was the bronze medalist in both the 50 and 100 at the 2000 Sydney Games. Her only other individual Olympic medal was in the 100-meter butterfly, also eight years ago. The remainder of her Olympic medals are from relays.
