WASHINGTON -- The criticism continues on Capitol Hill over the Air Force's decision to award a $35 billion aircraft contract to Airbus over Boeing.Washington Sen. Patty Murray gave a 10-minute speech on the Senate floor Tuesday morning, slamming the announcement that came out Friday. She started off telling her fellow senators that Boeing workers in Everett are frustrated, angry and dismayed that they'll no longer be building the refueling tankers. Boeing has had the military contract for 50 years. Murray said one worker called the decision a slap in the face.Murray said she has a lot of tough questions to ask the Air Force and the Bush administration. She outlined her concerns in three specific areas.First, she asked: How can the United States justify outsourcing its military capabilities? Then she questioned why the military would choose what she called an unproven plane. Finally, she talked about how the economic impact wasn't taken into consideration.Next Week the Air Force has a meeting scheduled to brief Boeing on why it didn't receive the contract. On Monday members of Washington state's congressional delegation wrote a letter to Defense Secretary Robert Gates requesting he move up that meeting to this week. KIRO 7 has learned that change will likely happen and the meeting will take place later this week.
