Cox Conserves Heroes -- Vote Now!

Posted: 12:33 pm PDT September 28, 2008Updated: 10:47 am PDT October 6, 2008

KIRO-TV, along with Cox Enterprises -- our parent company -- and The Trust for Public Land, is proud to announce the finalists for the first-ever Cox Conserves Heroes award. This nationwide program, launched in Western Washington in summer of 2008, honors the environmental heroes among us. These heroes work behind the scenes to improve and preserve shared parks and outdoor spaces. Whether picking up litter in their neighborhoods, planting community gardens or restoring shorelines in Puget Sound, they make our region a better place for all of us to live.

Our finalists, in alphabetical order, are:

Andrew Catero, restoring Thornton Creek
Non-profit organization of choice: EarthCorps

Karen Dougherty, keeping Island Lake Clean
Non-profit organization of choice: Northwest Raptor Center

Nancie Kosnoff, encouraging organic gardening
Non-profit organization of choice: Queen Anne Neighbors for Responsible Growth

Judy Pickens, restoring Fauntleroy Creek
Non-profit organization of choice: EarthCorps

Mike Town, preserving the Wild Sky Wilderness
Non-profit organization of choice: Washington Wilderness Coalition

Go to Cox Conserves Heroes to watch the stories of their extraordinary volunteer efforts. Hear, in their own words, their motivation. Then, vote for the hero you believe should receive $5000 to give to her or his environmental non-profit organization of choice. The deadline to vote is 8 a.m. PST on Wednesday, October 15.

Our hope is to inspire you to take action and to participate in a future Cox Conserves Heroes award process, the next being in spring 2009. Until then, go here let us know what you do now to improve and preserve our shared outdoor spaces. And, visit us often to learn what other kirotv.com viewers are doing to make our region a better place for all of us.

Thank you for making the launch of Cox Conserves Heroes a success. The nominees were outstanding and clear evidence that the environment is important to Western Washington citizens.
