Costco, Others Recall Beds After Toddler Killed

Thursday, July 3, 2008 – updated: 4:29 pm PDT July 13, 2008

Two children’s beds have been recalled Thursday after a toddler was killed.

These beds were sold at Costco, and other stores, from January of 2006 through May of 2008.

And if you have one in your home, the advice from the Consumer Product Safety Commission is do not let your child sleep in it tonight.

The beds are both made in China and imported by Bayside Furnishings of San Diego.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, a 22-month old California boy was strangled when the lid of the toy chest on his bed, called the LaJolla Boat Bed, fell on the back of his head, trapping his neck on the edge of the chest, killing him.

Today, the CPSC announced a voluntary recall of the LaJolla Boat Bed and the Pirates of the Caribbean Trundle Bed, which also has a hardwood top with a hinge.

The CPSC tells KIRO 7 that 95 percent of these beds were sold at Costco stores across the country.

Costco says a letter is going out to all 6,000 members who purchased the bed and free repair kits will be delivered to them by the bed importer next week.

Meanwhile, there are a couple of holiday recalls to be aware of for the Fourth of July weekend.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has also just announced the recall of 20,000 Black Cat fireworks, sold under the name "Screech and Scream" because they can unexpectedly scatter debris, injuring people nearby.

Also being recalled 85,000 "Oh Chute" Parachute with Streamer fireworks.

The CPSC warns the parachutes can get tangled in overhead power lines, causing electric shock.

Both recalled fireworks, and the recalled beds, are made in China.

KIRO 7 Consumer Investigator Amy Clancy spoke with Craig Wilson of Costco who assured her that the wholesaler will work very closely with all members who own the beds.

And, if customers are not comfortable with the repairs, they can return the beds for a full refund.

But don’t pack it up and take it back to the store. You need to call the toll free number at Bayside at 877-494-2536 anytime.
