New Company Helps Renters Establish Credit

Updated: 4:27 pm PST February 24, 2004

Renters say it's just not fair.

The biggest monthly payment in their life doesn't count toward their credit rating.

Consumer Investigator Wayne Havrelly has been looking into something that just might change that and help renters buy a home.

What we're talking about here is a brand new credit bureau created just for renters.

It's a free Web-based service and it could help renters finally get some credit for making all those huge monthly payments on time.

Steve Hauer says he hasn't missed a rent payment in four years but he still can't buy a car.

"Last year I was thinking about getting a car but I have no credit because all I've done is rent. So I got a credit card and am finally getting credit under my show," said Hauer.

Now there's a way to build your all important credit rating simply by paying rent.

"Pay Rent, Build Credit, Inc." is a free Web-based service where you can submit information to verify you've paid your bills on time especially the rent.

The idea is to reach out to people who are struggling to qualify for a mortgage and give them some credit for paying rent on time.

Several large mortgage companies like the idea. The mortgage unit for Citigroup and Fannie Mae are now paying money to receive credit data from "Pay Rent, Build Credit, Inc." It could eventually lead to more qualified home buyers.

Renters can do everything online. If you bank over the Internet or phone, your payment information can be sent automatically to this new credit reporting agency. But the service is still brand new so many banks don't know about it yet.

Eventually the new credit reporting agency hopes to have banks, landlords and realtors everywhere helping verify when renters make timely payments.

Steve Hauer is all for it; he thinks he deserves a better credit rating.

"I don't think I've ever missed a payment. I pay by the first of the week," said Hauer.

Right now, getting verification that you paid the rent is tough. But that could change if more local banks and businesses sign up with this new credit reporting agency for renters.

Right now I'm told Washington Mutual is considering the new program.

We'll keep an eye on it for you.
