New Form Of Identity Theft Sweeping eBay

A new form of identity theft is becoming very popular on eBay. Crooks are beginning to steal the identity of customers with great reputations and selling items with their account information.

"It looked all legitmate, 100% satisfaction and whatnot...so I went through with it," said Kyle Samples.

Samples thought he was getting a 2005 Yamaha motorbike for $3000. After sending in a money order he never heard from the seller again or received the motorbike.

Donnie Dorsett also became a victim after receiving a supposed email from eBay.

“It said my account status was about to expire and I needed to verify my user i.d., my password and the credit card that I created the account with,” said Dorsett.

The problem was Dorsett didn’t create her eBay account with a credit card but made the mistake of responding to the email. A few weeks later she began receiving negative responses about her selling. Dorsett, though, had never sold a thing.

Her once stellar rating plummeted and eBay offered a new account but would not restore her rating.

Delaney Parshall is considered to be lucky. Bogus items were sold in her name but eBay red flagged her account. Unlike Dorsett, she was able to retain her rating.

“They cleared it up before I even knew about it, which was only a couple of days so… they must be doing a good job,” said Parshall.
