LOUISVILLE NEWS: Mentos

Students Set Record With Candy-Cola Geysers

1,800 Geysers Break Record Set In Belgium

POSTED: 6:57 pm PDT May 14, 2008

Students at Male High School in Louisville set a new world record Wednesday by simultaneously setting off the largest number of Mentos and diet cola geysers.

Eighteen hundred geysers erupted on the school's campus, breaking the previous record of 1,300, set in Belgium earlier this year, reported WLKY-TV in Louisville.

In addition to the recognition by the "Guinness Book of World Records," all proceeds from the experiment benefited the Ronald McDonald House.

Sponsors of the event said this was a good way to end the school year.

"They're loving it," said science teacher Jeff Wright. "It's a good way to celebrate going into finals, AP tests are over, CATS tests are over. It's a good way to bring the school together as a family and have some fun and learn some science, too."

In order to verify the record, the school was required to have three media sources as witnesses, as well as a lawyer and an accountant.
