Police: Pot, Gun Found In Teacher's Car

Texas School District Places 4th-Grade Teacher On Paid Leave

POSTED: 7:20 pm PDT May 15, 2008

Parents in one Texas school district are livid after police said a fourth-grade teacher was arrested when deputies found marijuana and a loaded handgun in a car on an elementary school campus.

Tanya Boyd, 46, was arrested by Guadalupe County sheriff's deputies after a drug-sniffing dog alerted deputies to the drugs in her vehicle, authorities said. Deputies also found the gun during the search, they said.

Deputies said the investigation began after they were tipped off Boyd was smoking marijuana in the parking lot during her breaks, reported KSAT-TV in San Antonio.

Boyd has worked for the Navarro Independent School District since 2005 and was well liked by her students, Superintendent Dee Carter said.

"Was there anything we missed or have we overlooked anything with our security policies? I don't believe that's the case," Carter said.

Boyd is currently on paid leave from the district, pending a more permanent solution from district officials, Carter said.
