Professor Wrestling: Recapping TNA's 'Destination X'

Joe Goes For NWA Crown

Listen up!

Class is in session.

Total Nonstop Action wrestling was back on pay-per-view Sunday night with "Destination X" from Orlando, with Christian Cage putting up his NWA title against the fantastic Samoa Joe. More on that one in a minute, but first, let's take a look at some of the other big matches on the card:

Challenge Match: Kurt Angle vs. Scott Steiner
What Should Happen: Strangely, these ring veterans have never locked up before in a pro wrestling ring. Steiner is GREAT in small doses, but he's not exactly a guy who can put on a great wrestling match. No worries, though. He has Mr. Angle to run the show, and I think it'll be a good one at that. For Angle to stay in the NWA title hunt, he should win this match.

What Will Happen: Angle wins via submission over Big Poppa Pump.

What Did Happen: Angle takes it, pinning BPP cleanly. I'd never thought I'd see a boring Kurt Angle match, but this one fit that bill. I expected much more.

X-Division Title Match: Chris Sabin (c) vs. Jerry Lynn
What Should Happen: Like any X-Division title match, this clash has the ability to steal the show. As for who should win, I'd pick the heel Sabin. If TNA is serious about Lynn competing in the ring for the foreseeable future, he can chase this Sabin. It certainly wouldn't hurt business. As usual, though, TNA needs to give these X-Division guys more time on the microphone. I still don't have a clue of what motivates most of the people in this division.

What Will Happen: Sabin gets the clean pin over Lynn.

What Did Happen: TNA officials made this two out of three falls before the PPV, and Sabin got two pins for the win. In the end, Christopher Daniels distracted Lynn -- giving Sabin an opening for his final victory.

Elevation-X Match: A.J. Styles vs. Rhino
What Should Happen: In this one, there will be four steel beams above the ring to form an "X." The guy to throw his opponent off the glorified ramp is the winner. I don't know. I'm all for innovation in the art form that is pro grappling, but this looks pretty dangerous -- a concussion (or worse) waiting to happen. But the die is cast, and they'll go through with it. Should Rhino win? Why not? Styles is a heel these days, and can absorb the loss quite easily.

What Will Happen: I have a feeling the heavier Rhino will come crashing down first. It might make for a better visual.

What Did Happen: Kids, I have to say this was a great gimmick match. It was choreographed perfectly, and the entire time I was nervous that someone might actually get seriously hurt. In the end, Styles took the plunge, and Rhino won. Really good stuff.

Last Rites Match: Sting vs. Abyss
What Should Happen: Another gimmick match? This must be TNA! Here, I guess you strap your opponent to a casket that will be raised to the ceiling. Once your vanquished foe is in the rafters, you celebrate a glorious victory. Or something like that. I think Abyss should take the sky ride, and come back repackaged as a babyface. His monster-nut angle has run its course, if you ask me. Sting should take him under his wing and see what happens. His manager, the great James Mitchell, should jump to WWE and start a monster heel stable. That would be cool.

What Will Happen: Unless Sting's contract is up and they're not going to re-sign him -- I'm going with Abyss to lose.

What Did Happen: Where the Rhino-Styles match was great, this was a real letdown. Sting bled the whole way, and the crowd seemed to hate it, chanting "Fire (writer Vince) Russo." I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it. It was too gimmicky and dumb. For the record, Sting won. Time for these two to move onto something else.

NWA Championship Match: Christian Cage vs. Samoa Joe
What Should Happen: If it were up to me, I'd let Samoa Joe stew for a bit before he gets his title run. So if I were writing the script, I'd have Christian's stooge -- Tyson Tomko -- interfere on Cage's behalf, allowing for the victory. But Tyson should then turn around and demand a title shot. It's only fair.

What Will Happen: I'm guessing it's still too early for Joe to hold the gold. I'm sticking with Cage to win.

What Did Happen: For this one, Tomko was "in Japan" and couldn't be ringside. But in an excellent encounter, Cage outfoxed Joe for the pin and the victory. I want a rematch!

That'll do it for my "Destination X" picks. For the record, I was four out of five in my predictions. I don't feel bad getting the Styles-Rhino finish wrong because the match was so great. If you get a chance to see it -- do so, because it was really something.

On the subject of greatness, don't forget to download the "Old School, New School" podcast. This week, it's Episode 23, and you can download it RIGHT HERE! This time around my guests Dr. Mike Lano and George Schire pick the greatest heel tag teams of all time, go thumbs up or thumbs down on WWE's Carlito, and find out what Kevin Sullivan and Nick Bockwinkle are up to these days. Don't be a dunce, listen to us -- if just this once.

That's it!

Class is dismissed!
