'Scotty's' Ashes To Meet Final Frontier Saturday

Some Of Doohan's Remains Aboard Rocket

Nearly two years after his death, Scotty will beam up to "space -- the final frontier" on Saturday.

Some of "Star Trek" star James Doohan's ashes are being launched into space via a rocket launch in New Mexico.

Doohan played chief engineer Montgomery "Scotty" Scott on the classic television series "Star Trek" and some of the subsequent movies that featured the original show's cast.

Earlier this month, a metal canister of the ashes was loaded into the rocket in preparation for the launch near Las Cruces.

The remains of Doohan, Mercury astronaut Gordon Cooper and about 200 others will also be along for the ride.

A public memorial service is taking place Friday about an hour away from the launch site in Alamogordo, N.M.

Doohan was 85 when he died of complications from Alzheimer's disease in July 2005.
