Opening in June 2003, Marion Oliver McCaw Hall was designed to engage the entire community while honoring the patrons and performers it serves.
The 17,800 square foot Kreielsheimer Promenade is a public plaza which serves as both the grand entry to Marion Oliver McCaw Hall and a welcoming link between Seattle Center and Mercer Street. Water elements, landscape features and outdoor seating areas and the terrazzo walkway are bathed in choreographed colored light, which is projected onto nine 30-foot-tall sheer metal scrims. A luminous five-story curving glass facade is a stunning architectural presence both symbolizing the uplifting enjoyment of live performance and blurring the line between outside and inside allowing the art to be drawn out of the building. The 9,000 square foot Kreielsheimer Lobby inside the hall immediately conveys the open and airy design of the building with captivating floor to ceiling views of all lobbies. On this level guests can purchase tickets to Pacific Northwest Ballet, Seattle Opera and Seattle Center events at the box office, enjoy a bite to eat in the cafe with indoor and outdoor seating and browse the gift shop. High-speed elevators provide access to the entire hall and the grand staircase rises towards the Grand Lobby.
At the top of the grand staircase is the 12,000 square foot Grand Lobby which provides guest access to the Orchestra Level (main floor seating) of the Susan Brotman Auditorium. Looking up one can see the framing for the upper lobbies, all of which are open to the five-story serpentine glass wall. The 5,500 First Tier Lobby, directly above the Grand Lobby, provides guest access to First Tier seating areas and First Tier Side Boxes as well as the North and South Donor Rooms which feature a full range of hosting amenities. The Second Tier Lobby is spacious at 7,500 square feet. This lobby leads to Second Tier seating areas as well as Second Tier Side Boxes.
The surfaces of all the lobbies shimmer with reflective materials, including a collage of iridescent fabrics on the back wall, which will contrast dramatically with the deep wine hue of the carpet. Each level is an excellent place to gather with amazing views of Seattle Center, the Theatre District, Queen Anne and Downtown Seattle. All lobbies will feature concessions, men's and women's restrooms on each side of the auditorium and family restrooms.
The 2,900 seat Susan Brotman Auditorium honors the moment when art touches our emotions. The narrow design of the Auditorium, a characteristic of great halls around the world, creates superb sightlines and a more intimate relationship between performer and patron. This relationship is further enhanced with elevated side seating sections that embrace the stage, balconies that reach towards the stage and 16 side seating boxes which all face the stage. Retention of the acclaimed acoustics from the Opera House will continue to provide patrons with magnificent operatic and musical performances.
Behind the scenes are multiple technical and production enhancements which will allow Marion Oliver McCaw Hall to stage world-class engagements without limitations.
