Workshop #1 - Working With Words: An Approach to Teaching and Integrating Vocabulary StudyJanuary 26, 2013, 9:00 am-Noon About the presentation:Vocabulary teaching is one of the ESOL teacher’s biggest jobs. However, we often leave it to chance or wonder how we will have time for it. This workshop provides a principled approach to teaching vocabulary. You will learn how to make informed selections of vocabulary; multiple ways to teach new words and phrases, a variety of activities to activate and apply new learning and how to review and recycle vocabulary over time. We will plan a vocabulary pathway over a whole unit of study and learn tips and tricks to integrate vocabulary study in all areas of language teaching.Presenter:Alysan Croydon. MIT in ESL, School for International Training. Alysanhas over twenty years of teaching experience in many settings, including Brazil, Egypt, Portugal, and Costa Rica. She is also a teacher trainer for the Tacoma Community House which provides training to adult education teacher and volunteers. Workshop #2 - Using Assessment to Improve Your Instruction February 23, 2013, 9:00 am-Noon About the presentation:Did you know that assessment can be the key to a streamlined curriculum and happy students? If you and your students feel burdened by assessment (testing and evaluation), then you are most likely not benefiting from it in the way that you could be. In this workshop, you will discover how to create assessments that will improve classroom instruction as well as student motivation.About the presenter:Gretchen Fues, MA TESOL, SPU; TESOL Certificate, School of TESL Gretchen has taught ESL in Texas, Washington, and Spain; she currently teaches Grammar/Writing for IEP students at NSCC and Testing and Evaluation of ESOL Students at The School of Teaching ESL. She has served on numerous committees, including assessment planning, and is the Testing and Placement Coordinator for IEP Students at NSCC.Intended Audience: English language teachers working with secondary or adult students.Workshop #3 - ESOL Teaching Strategies for VolunteersMarch 2, 2012, 9am-3pm. About the presentation:This workshop is intended for volunteers working with English Language Learners in group and tutoring settings. In this hands -on session, participants will learn how to teach speaking and reading skills for all levels of language development. Effective teaching strategies and tools will be demonstrated with lots of fun activities to spark interest and practice English. Volunteers will learn how to assess students’ needs and plan lessons.
