Vashon resident Merna Hecht is an award-winning poet, storyteller and arts and literacy educator, who has built her life work around the vital role of story and spoken word in communities and cultures. Drawing on his Cherokee, Tlingit, and Filipino heritage, Gene Tagaban has been sharing laughter and learning for more than 20 years as a performance artist, speaker, trainer, motivator and actor. Shane Kenode is a hip-hop artist, storyteller, and youth mentor who works with story as a spoken medicine used to heal people and their relations. VWP provides nature immersion programs for youth ages 4-17 from Vashon Island and surrounding Puget Sound communities based on the lineage of deep nature connection mentoring called Coyote Mentoring. This approach, touted as "... good medicine for nature deficit disorder" by award-winning author Richard Louv, has enabled more than 400 youth over the past 6 years to revitalize their dormant senses and restore their human connection with nature. VWP's programs focus on the local natural and cultural history of the South Sound/Puget Sound bioregion, including the way our predecessors interacted with local ecosystems to create a life for themselves. Storytelling is a core routine at all VWP programs. VWP mentors practice oral traditions to inspire and instill lessons and to help cultivate a learning community that values each person life story. VWP students practice sharing their story of day to both help deepen their learning journey and discover their authentic voice.
