Description:
Featuring national and local storytellers in an evening of performances celebrating and affirming Latino heritage and culture. Description:
This event will showcase national and local Latino performing artists as part of the Midwinter American Library Association (ALA) conference.
Mistress of Ceremonies, Sandra Rios Balderrama, will guide us through an evening of dancing and storytelling in Spanish and English.
Featured performers will include:
Margaret Read MacDonald - folklorist, children’s librarian, and author of more than 55 books on folklore and storytelling.
Rose Cano - bilingual actress and storyteller who uses colorful and high-energy musical storytelling to bring to life unique and fantastical tales of ancient Latin America.
Sonia Porras - director of the Academy of Peruvian Folkdances. Sonia and her dance partner, Kenny Wiesse, will perform the Marinera Costeňa, a coastal dance generally called the "National Dance of Peru."
Oralia Garza de Cortés - co-founder of the Pura Belpré Award, and 2012 recipient of the REFORMA (The National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish-Speaking) Library Advocacy Award of the Joint Conference of Librarians of Color.
Lucia Gonzalez - Two-time winner of the Pura Belpré Children’s Literature Honor Medal.
