An Academy Award® Nominated Best Foreign Language Film anchored by a fierce, award-winning performance from 15-year-old Rachel Mwanza, War Witch tells the story of Komona, a young girl enslaved to a life of guerrilla warfare in the African jungle.
Forced to commit unspeakable acts of brutality, she finds hope for survival in protective, ghost-like visions (inspiring a rebel chief to anoint her "War Witch"), and in a tender relationship with a fellow soldier named Magician (Serge Kanyinda). Together, they manage to escape the rebels' clutches, and a normal life finally seems within reach. But after their freedom proves short-lived, Komona realizes she must find a way to bury the ghosts of her past.
Montreal-based filmmaker Kim Nguyen spent nearly ten years in production and traveled deep into the Democratic Republic of the Congo to tell a story that is both a harrowing portrait of children at war and an impossible love story filled with magic. $11 | $6 SIFF Members | $10 Youth (20 & under) and Seniors (65+) Matinees: $8 | $6 SIFF Members * contact the Venue listed below for ticketing information
