Israel's hit coming-of-age film follows a teenage boy in 1968 who begins working with a mysterious matchmaker and learns both the contradictions of the human heart, and how the Holocaust changed the lives of the people around him.
A voracious reader who wants to write detective novels, teenaged Arik dreams becoming the next Dashiell Hammett. So he is naturally drawn to working as an "investigator" for Yankele Bride-a matchmaker and Holocaust survivor who also engages in some dubious activities. Most of this work takes place in the seedy neighborhood of the Lower City, an area filled sailors, prostitutes, gambling…and a movie theater that shows only love stories, run by a family of Romanian dwarves. It is a new world, and the disparate parts of Arik's life collide in unexpected, funny, and moving ways, making the summer of 1968 one that changes both Arik and Yankele forever. $11 | $6 SIFF Members | $10 Youth (20 & under) and Seniors (65+) Matinees: $8 | $6 SIFF Members * contact the Venue listed below for ticketing information
