Dolphins Take Wrong Turn, End Up In N.J.

Wayward Dolphins Attract Crowd

POSTED: 7:49 am PDT June 30, 2008

The latest visitors to the New Jersey shore are just like any other tourists, playing in the water and eating fresh seafood. But they are also getting hassled by the locals, and so these bottlenose dolphins have to go.

For two weeks, the dolphins have been frolicking in the Shrewsbury and Navesink rivers. Scientists think they took a wrong turn inland following schools of bait fish.

The worry is that the dolphins could be injured or killed by passing watercraft, particularly with July Fourth approaching.

Officials are working on a plan to get them out to the open waters of Sandy Hook Bay and then the ocean.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration told the Asbury Park Press last Thursday that there was no change in the dolphins' healthy status.

Boaters are facing fines as high as $25,000 for harming or harassing dolphins.
