Rescue helicopters from the Coast Guard and the Navy were dispatched Monday and early Tuesday to rescue people stranded at their homes because of heavy winds and flooding in Centralia and Chehalis, officials said.

Flooding caused by the Chehalis River spilling over dike banks prompted officials to call for voluntary evacuations for anyone who had water coming into their residence and were able to safely leave without waiting to be rescued.

By 10 p.m. Monday Coast Guard helicopters had hoisted 66 people from areas surrounded by water, in some cases from rooftops, said Petty Officer Kelly Parker in Seattle. Rescue operations continued throughout the night.

By early Tuesday morning, 65 more people, five dogs and a cat had been rescued. Efforts are continuing Tuesday in west Lewis County also in Centralia near Long Road where water is spilling over a dike. It is unknown whether the dike has broken or whether water is just spilling over the top.

The rescued people have been taken to an emergency center set up at a soccer field in Chehalis.

A spokeswoman in Seattle, Petty Officer Tara Molle, said 10 Coast Guard copters are being used from Port Angeles, Astoria and North Bend in Oregon, and San Francisco and San Diego.

Residents are urged not to drive through flooded areas.
