Bad Fishing Weather Likely To Raise Copper River Salmon Prices

The first Copper River salmon arrived Friday morning, but bad weather in Alaska shortened the shipment of fish and the Northwest favorite is expected to cost more this year.

The first batch came into Sea-Tac Airport at 6 a.m. on an Alaska Airlines cargo plane. About 10 tons were expected, but only 3.5 tons came in.

"Supply is not going to meet the demand because the storm up in Cordova caused a lot of boats to be docked," said QFS seafood buyer Russ Richardson.

Distributors have been negotiating with fisherman and the cost for the fish was not set as of Friday morning.

Last year, QFC charged about $30 a pound for the King Copper River salmon, but high fuel prices and weather factors will likely increase the price this year.
