  • Rep. Anthony Weiner teared up during a press conference on June 6, 2011, where he admitted he had
  • John Edwards got himself into hot water -- to put it mildly -- after his affair -- and love child -- with campaign worker Rielle Hunter were made public in 2008. The revelation ended Edwards' bid for the presidency and his marriage to wife Elizabeth. He was indicted by a grand jury on June 3, 2011 of six felony charged, including misuse of campaign funds.
  • Eliot Spitzer was a golden child of New York politics, serving as the state's governor, before his dalliances with a high priced call girl were leaked, ruining his political career. The married Spitzer (seen here with wife Silda) bounced back as the host of a current events show on CNN.
  • South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford's claim that he was hiking the Appalachian Trail when he was in fact rendezvousing with his mistress led to the end of his marriage and his political career.
  • On May 9, 2011, after he had completed his term as governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger separated from Maria Shriver after 25 years of marriage, with Shriver moving out of the couple's Brentwood mansion. A week later, the Los Angeles Times revealed that Schwarzenegger had fathered a son more than 14 years earlier with an employee in their household.
  • Gary Hart had just come off as a successful run as a senator in Colorado and was a frontrunner for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1988 when news broke of his extramarital affair. After being linked to model Donna Rice as well as several other women, Hart dropped out of the race.
  • Rep. David Wu, D-Ore. announced in July 2011 that he is resigning in the wake of allegations that he had a sexual encounter with an 18-year-old woman.
  • Nevada Senator John Ensign's critics had a story they could sink theirteeth into when he admitted to having an affair with a married campaign staffer in 2009. Ensign resigned on May 3, 2011 in the midst of an ethics investigation connected to the affair.
  • Reports of an affair were the least of Kwame Kilpatrick's (seen here with his wife) problems when the Detroit mayor was sentenced to four months in jail for obstruction of justice. He had previously resigned as mayor after denying trading sexually explicit text messages with his chief of staff from 2002 to 2003. In 2009, he was sentenced to up to five years in jail for violating his probation.
  • An alleged encounter in a bathroom in the Minneapolis airport led to the downfall of U.S. Senator Larry Craig. He was arrested for lewd conduct in 2007, accused of soliciting sex from an undercover male police officer. Craig denied he was gay and said the incident was a misunderstanding, but didn't seek re-election in 2008.
  • James McGreevy was a married father when he resigned as governor of New Jersey in November 2004 after revealing he was gay and admitted to an affair with a male staffer.
  • Jack Ryan was a candidate for the U.S. Senate in 2004 when his divorce records -- from his split with actress Jeri Ryan -- were released. His ex alleged he forced her to have public sex, amongst other unsavory acts. He dropped out of the race; a pre-presidential Barack Obama ended up winning.
