Rhoden Wins Celebrity Golf Event For Seventh Time

POSTED: 3:45 pm PDT July 13, 2008

(Sports Network) - Rick Rhoden, a former major league pitcher, birdied the final hole Sunday to fend off Dan Quinn and win the American Century Championship for the seventh time.

Rhoden picked up 23 points in the final round to total 68 for the week. Quinn, a former NHL player, tallied 28 points in the final round to finish one back with 67 points at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course.

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo and former NHL goaltender Grant Fuhr shared third place at 64 points. Romo collected 21 points in the final round, while Fuhr's 27 points were second only to Quinn for best round of the day.

Under the modified Stableford scoring system, players are awarded 10 points for a double-eagle, eight points for a hole-in-one, six points for an eagle, three points for a birdie, one point for a par and zero points for a bogey. Two points are subtracted for each score of double-bogey or worse.

Rhoden picked up 10 points on the front nine with seven pars and a birdie. He parred the first seven holes of the back nine before closing with back-to-back birdies to overtake Quinn for the title.

Quinn carded six pars and two birdies on the first nine for 12 points to make the turn with 55 points. He collected back-to-back birdies from the 11th and again from the 16th to take the lead with 66 points.

Prior to Rhoden sinking a seven-foot birdie putt for the win, Quinn scrambled to a par to finish one point short.

Actor Jack Wagner and former NHL standout Brett Hull each scored 25 points Sunday to share fifth with 62. They were joined there by Pierre Larouche (21 points).

At the bottom end of the leaderboard, former NBA star Charles Barkley dropped 26 points in the final round and finished 20 points worse than Denver quarterback Jay Cutler. For the week, Barkley finished with minus-81 points.
