Superbug Appears Again In Port Townsend

A Port Townsend pre-school has been closed Monday morning because of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA.

Two cases of the contagious staph infection known as the superbug have been confirmed in Port Townsend and third is awaiting lab test results.

The first case was confirmed at Port Townsend High School last Wednesday. A senior football player was diagnosed with the infection that prompted school officials to cancel a Saturday football game so the athletic facilities could be disinfected.

Officials said that one of that student’s teammates may also be infected.

On Friday, an adult with ties to Grant Street Elementary School’s preschool was diagnosed with MRSA. The preschool will be closed Monday and Tuesday as a precaution.

While classes at Port Townsend High School have resumed, half of the students have not returned to classes.

Students across Clallam and Jefferson counties are being urged by health officials to practice good hygiene and wash their hands frequently.

Yelm Prairie Elementary school in Thurston County is open Monday following precautionary disinfecting efforts at the school on Friday after a student came down with what may be a drug-resistant staph infection.

District officials said further tests will need to be done to determine if the boy has MRSA.
