Good Choices Can Make Pizza Healthful

Pizza is many things, including tasty and portable.

And if you pay attention to your toppings, pizza can be nutritious, too.

Pizza crust provides carbohydrates and B vitamins. The cheese adds calcium and protein, while tomato sauce contains vitamins A and C, along with other nutritious compounds.

Top your pizza with ingredients that maximize nutrition:

  • Canadian bacon or lean ham
  • Artichoke hearts, peppers, broccoli or spinach
  • Shrimp or crabmeat
  • Pineapple
  • Choose thin crust over stuffed, deep dish or thick, all of which are higher in fat and calories. And see if whole-grain crust is an option.

    Have a salad with your pizza to both fill you up and increase the nutritional content of your meal.
