BOCA RATON, Fla. -- The family of a Boca Raton teenager who died after corrective breast surgery has filed a lawsuit against the plastic surgeon and anesthesiologist, WPBF-TV in West Palm Beach reported.Stephanie Kuleba, a co-captain on West Boca High School's cheerleading squad, died in 2008 after having surgery to correct asymmetrical breasts and inverted areola. An autopsy later determined the 18-year-old died of malignant hyperthermia, a rare condition that causes an adverse reaction to certain types of anesthesia. The lawsuit, filed Tuesday in Palm Beach County, claims both the surgeon, Steven Schuster, and her anesthesiologist, Peter Warheit, did not recognize the condition quickly enough and did not properly administer a drug to counteract the condition."People survive malignant hyperthermia episodes if treated quickly and properly, according to medical standards," Kuleba's mother, Joanne, said in a statement Wednesday. "Stephanie was not afforded such care."Tom Kuleba said he hopes his daughter's death will raise awareness of malignant hypothermia and prevent future surgery-related deaths.Neither the surgeon's office nor the anesthesiologist's office commented on the lawsuit.
