Viagra-Like Drugs May Shrink Hearts

Heart Problems Can Cause Enlargement

Posted: 6:20 am PDT September 25, 2009

Compounds related to Viagra, which is already in clinical trials to prevent heart failure, may also counter conditions in which the heart gets too big, according to a new study.

A news release from the University of Rochester said heart failure affects about 5.7 million people in the U.S. If disease causes heart cells to die, fewer cells must push the same amount of blood. When that happens, the muscle cells can grow too large, thickening the walls of the heart.

The condition is known as hypertrophy.

The release said that Pfizer, Viagra's maker, is sponsoring a trial to see if the drug can slow the excessive growth.

Researchers are trying to determine if Viagra, beta blockers and other drugs can work together to lower the risks from hypertrophy.

When the heart muscles get too big, it can be a risk factor for heart attacks and other problems.
