Pregnancy Tests Get Digital Upgrade
POSTED: 5:48 p.m. PDT August 19, 2003
Home pregnancy tests have taken a new modern twist.
The first home pregnancy test were introduced in 1988, and over the years they have become faster and more accurate.
But now, they're easier than ever to simply read.
Taking a home pregnancy test can be an trying experience.
"I've actually done early pregnancy tests. And sometimes the line, one line comes through really dark and the other one's kinda dark. And I go, well, that didn't work. Well, I guess I'll go to the doctor, you know," said one pregnancy test user.
But at home pregnancy testing has turned a corner. The FDA has cleared the first home pregnancy test with a digital read out. The Clear Blue Easy digital pregnancy test doesn't use lines or colors, it uses simple words: Pregnant or Not Pregnant.
The display also indicates if there is an error.
"This is the first major breakthrough in home pregnancy testing in nearly a generation," said Dr. Machelle Seibel.
The new test promises to be 99 percent accurate when used from the first day of a missed period. But there's a caution: Some women may not have detectable levels of pregnancy hormone early in pregnancy and will have to test again.
Like the old test, the new digital test isn't smart enough yet to overcome user error.
The new digital pregnancy test doesn't promise to be more accurate than other tests on the market. However you will pay a couple of dollars more for the new test.
