Deweycheatumnhowe Headlines 83rd Hambletonian

POSTED: 11:30 am PDT July 29, 2008

(Sports Network) - Deweycheatumnhowe, 2007 champion two- year-old, is the overwhelming favorite for Saturday's $1.5 million Hambletonian at The Meadowlands. Harness racing's premier event, the Hambletonian has a field of 10 three-year-old trotters going one-mile.

Deweycheatumnhowe will be driven by trainer and co-owner Ray Schnittker from the inside post. The colt has been made the 2-5 favorite for the second leg in trotting's Triple Crown. The first leg, Yonkers Trot, went to Napoleon who did not qualify for Saturday.

Deweycheatumnhowe is perfect in 14 lifetime starts for nearly $1.2 million. He is coming off a 6 1/4 length victory in one of last week's Hambletonian elimination races.

"It's nice to get in. You never know what is going to happen in an elimination," said Schnittker about the colt's elimination victory. "He was very, very good and I was really happy with him. He's just got awesome speed when you ask him to go. He did it very easy. It was probably one of his best miles ever."

He will attempt to become the seventh trotter over the past 62 years to be unbeaten at age three: Donato Hanover (2007), Scarlet Knight (2001), Malabar Man (1997), Mack Lobell (1987), Sharp Note (1952) and Titan Hanover (1945).

"You can drive him with two fingers," said Schnittker. "He likes this track, most horses do, and he just gets over the ground great"

This year Deweycheatumnhowe has earned $267,055 in his four races.

Schnittker is also the trainer for Empire Breeders Classic winner Make It Happen who will start from post ten in the Hambletonian final. Make it Happen got into the race despite finishing fourth in an elimination race to winner Atomic Hall. Make It Happen is 30-1 in the morning-line and will be driven by Daniel Dube. The colt was second in the $605,854 Yonkers Trot on June 28 at Yonkers Raceway.

Here is the complete field for the Hambletonian in post position order: Deweycheatumnhowe, Ray Schnittker 2-5; Crazed, Tim Tetrick 5-1; Atomic Hall, Eric Goodell 10-1; Kajan Kooker, Mike Lachance 20-1; Pine After Pine, Ron Pierce 12-1; Big Apple Deli, John Campbell 15-1; Velocity Hall, David Miller 20-1; Clerk Magistrate, Trevor Ritchie 10-1; Celebrity Secret, Brian Sears 15-1 and Make It Happen, Daniel Dube 30-1.

The race will be televised live nationally by NBC Sports with a scheduled post-time of 2:43 p.m. (et).

The final jewel in the Triple Crown is the Kentucky Futurity at The Red Mile on Saturday, October 4.
