Crowds Expected For Job Fair At Safeco Field

In light of the shaky economy, organizers of a job fair said they are expecting large crowds at the event Tuesday at Safeco Field. Dozens of employers, like Safeway, Wells Fargo and some government agencies will be there to find workers.

A job specialist that KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Jeff Dubois spoke with said there are jobs available but in the coming months, he expects the job market to begin tightening up as more companies are forced to lay off workers.

Retirees are also re-entering the workforce because of money lost in the stock market.

In addition, experts said they are seeing a lot of people leaving the real estate industry to look for new work because of the dramatic slowdown in the Seattle housing market. Agents, brokers, lenders and appraisers can't find as much work as in previous months and and aren't making as much money.

Job specialist Michael Lee said the jobs he's finding are mostly in the product and manufacturing sector and that many of them are temporary.

Lee said companies are being cautious and instead of hiring full-time employees, they're saving money on benefits by hiring temporary or part-time workers until they know how the economy is going to rebound in the coming months.

Tuesday's job fair is at Safeco Field from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free.
