Lady Monarchs Use Extra Frame To Beat Virginia

Norfolk, VA -- (Sports Network) - Jazzmin Walters hit a three-pointer with 4.8 seconds left in overtime to lift the Old Dominion Lady Monarchs to a thrilling 88-85 victory over the Virginia Cavaliers in second round action of the Women's NCAA Tournament at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.Walters scored 17 points while passing out 10 assists to pace ODU (31-4), while T.J. Jordan added 14 points in the win. Shadida Williams and Tiffany Green chipped in 13 points apiece for the Lady Monarchs, while Jessica Canady contributed 12 points to go with 10 boards. Old Dominion, seeded fifth in the Greensboro Region, will take on top seed Connecticut in the Sweet 16. Lyndra Littles poured in a game-high 29 points and hauled in 14 rebounds to lead Virginia (24-10), while Aisha Mohammed tallied 17 points and collected 15 rebounds. Sharnee Zoll added 13 points to go with nine assists in the losing effort, while Monica Wright chipped in 11 points for the Cavaliers. It was a cold-shooting first half for both clubs, but Virginia outscored ODU 13-4 over the last 3:20 of the period to take a 39-36 lead into the break. Virginia closed an 11-point deficit during the second frame and forced overtime on a free throw by Aisha Mohammed with just 1.8 seconds remaining in regulation.
ODU fell behind 85-81 during the extra stanza, but the Lady Monarchs closed the game on a 7-0 run, capped by Walters' game-winning trey. Green then blocked a tying three-point attempt from the Cavaliers at the buzzer, enabling the Lady Monarchs to escape with the three-point victory.
