Padres Acquire P Corey From BoSox

POSTED: 12:09 pm PDT May 11, 2008

(Sports Network) - The San Diego Padres acquired pitcher Bryan Corey from the Boston Red Sox on Sunday in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations.

Corey, who was outrighted to Triple-A Pawtucket on April 30, has a bloated 10.50 earned run average in seven relief appearances over two stints with the Red Sox this season.

The 34-year-old right-hander is 3-1 with a 4.40 ERA in 52 career relief appearances over parts of five seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks (1998), Los Angeles Dodgers (2002), Texas Rangers (2006) and Red Sox (2006-08).

To make room for Corey on the roster, the Padres optioned pitcher Joe Thatcher to Triple-A Portland.

Thatcher, 26, is 0-4 with a 6.75 earned run average in 16 relief appearances with the Padres this season.
