Oakland, CA -- (Sports Network) - Justin Duchscherer put on a dazzling display of pitching, throwing his first career shutout to lead the Athletics in a 2-0 win over the Mariners. Duchscherer (10-5), who inherited the ace role of Oakland's pitching staff after Rich Harden was traded to the Cubs, allowed only two hits the entire game and did not let a runner reach third base, finishing with three strikeouts while walking none and winning for the sixth time in seven starts. Tuesday marked his first career complete game. The righty is having a career year, having thrown quality starts in all but one game, and not having allowed more than two runs in a game since May 18 at Atlanta. A contender to start for the American League in the upcoming All-Star game, Duchscherer, who lowered his majors-leading ERA to 1.78, has given up only six runs in his last 46 2/3 innings, encompassing six starts. Ryan Sweeney, Kurt Suzuki and Jack Hannahan each had two hits for the A's, who have won four of their last six contests. Carlos Silva (4-11) took the hard-luck defeat, losing for the ninth time in his last 10 starts. Silva went the distance as well, throwing eight innings, giving up two runs on seven hits while striking out five and walking none. Richie Sexson had the lone extra base hit - a double in the fifth - for the Mariners, who have dropped three straight. Oakland got all the offense it needed on Emil Brown's RBI single with two outs in the first, scoring Sweeney from third. The Athletics added another run in the second after singles by Suzuki and Hannahan put runners on the corners with only one out. Donnie Murphy hit a sacrifice fly to center to bring the score to 2-0. Earlier in the day, Oakland traded ace pitcher Harden to the Chicago Cubs in a six-player deal that also saw reliever Chad Gaudin go to the first-place Cubs. The A's will receive highly-touted pitcher Sean Gallagher as well as outfielder Matt Murton, infielder Eric Patterson, and a minor league catcher.Game Notes:Before Monday, Seattle had won both of its contests in Oakland this season and had captured 10 of 11 at McAfee Coliseum since the start of last season.
