Braves Beat Dodgers

POSTED: 11:01 pm PDT July 8, 2008

(Sports Network) - Yunel Escobar drove in three runs, and Brian McCann belted a pair of solo home runs as the Atlanta Braves easily dispatched of the Los Angeles Dodger, 9-3, in the second of a three-game series at Dodger Stadium.

Mark Teixeira also homered for Atlanta, who picked up just their third win in last the last 10 games. Mark Kotsay went 3-for-4 and scored a pair of runs, while Kelly Johnson went 2-for-5 and crossed the plate three times.

Jair Jurrjens (9-4) allowed a run on five hits to pick up his fifth win in six decisions, striking out six and walking three in the process. An eight-run cushion heading into the ninth allowed the Braves to avoid a disastrous performance from reliever Julian Tavarez, who allowed two runs in one-third of an inning after signing with the Braves earlier Tuesday.

"I felt rusty early," Jurrjens said. "I didn't have control the first couple innings. When we got the big lead, I started feeling more confident, and I was throwing more strikes."

James Loney and Nomar Garciaparra each drove in a run for the Dodgers, who had a two-game win streak snapped. Chad Billingsley (8-8) allowed six runs -- five earned -- on six hits in 5 1/3 innings, striking out eight while walking four, and had a four-start winning streak ended.

Neither team pushed a run across until the fifth, when the Braves loaded the bases with one out thanks to singles by Johnson and Kotsay and a walk to Gregor Blanco. Escobar then ripped a grounder into the left field corner, clearing the bases with a double for a 3-0 Atlanta lead.

"Our offense tonight was awesome, we had the one big inning where Billingsley got behind guys," McCann said. "Then Escobar had the big hit, and we started rolling from there. Everybody's back healthy, this is our team."

McCann led off with a homer to right-center in the sixth, and with runners at first and third with one out, Billingsley was lifted for Ramon Troncoso. Jurrjens bunted Kotsay to second, and Blanco rifled a single into right. Johnson came in to score, and although Matt Kemp's throw beat Kotsay to the plate, Russell Martin dropped the ball and Kotsay slid in safely for a 6-0 gap.

The Dodgers pulled a run back in the bottom half, as Loney's check-swing double to shallow left brought in Andre Ethier, but Martin Prado answered with an RBI single against Joe Beimel in the eighth before Teixeira and McCann connected on back-to-back homers off Cory Wade in the ninth to give Atlanta a 9-1 lead.

Tavarez, making his first appearance for the Braves, loaded the bases with nobody out in the home ninth before two runs scored when Garciaparra grounded into a force play and Johnson misfired on the relay throw to first. Tavarez then walked Blake DeWitt before Mike Gonzalez finished off the win with a pair of strikeouts.

Game Notes

A streak of six consecutive games at Dodger Stadium with one team being shut out was broken...Jurrjens and Dodgers outfielder Andruw Jones are the only two major leaguers to come from the island of Curacao. The two matched up previously on April 20 in Atlanta, but on Tuesday Jones got the first hit against his countryman, an infield single off Jurrjens' glove in the second inning...The Dodgers were just 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position.
