National League Game Capsules

POSTED: 9:11 pm PDT July 17, 2008

(Sports Network) - David Wright's opposite-field two-run home run tied the game with one out in the ninth and Carlos Delgado's single drove in the go-ahead run, as the Mets rallied for their 10th straight victory, 10-8, over Cincinnati to kick off Major League Baseball's second half for both teams. New York won its 10th in a row for the first time since July 1-13, 1991. The franchise-best 11-game winning streak -- last achieved during the 1990 campaign -- is now just one win away. The red-hot Mets joined the Philadelphia Phillies atop the National League East with identical 52-44 records. On a day that saw the Phillies bolster their starting rotation with the acquisition of Joe Blanton from Oakland, New York went about its business in the same fashion it had prior to the All-Star break. Jose Reyes struck out to start the ninth, but pinch-hitter Argenis Reyes singled in front of Wright, who hit an outside fastball over Ken Griffey, Jr.'s glove and into the first row of seats in right field. Carlos Beltran and Damion Easley each singled to create a first-and-third situation. Delgado then ripped a base hit to center for a 9-8 lead and Fernando Tatis drove a double past Jay Bruce in left, scoring Easley for the final margin. Duaner Sanchez (1-0) pitched one frame for the win and Billy Wagner got back on the saddle after blowing the All-Star Game for the National League with his 23rd save. Johan Santana didn't have his best stuff for the Mets, giving up five runs on six hits with three walks and a pair of strikeouts over four laboring innings.Tatis and Delgado each finished 3-for-4 in the victory. Edwin Encarnacion went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and a solo home run for the Reds, losers in two straight.

Final Score: St. Louis 4, San Diego 3

St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Troy Glaus belted two of the Cardinals four solo homers, and St. Louis staved off a ninth inning rally to hold on for a 4-3 win over the San Diego Padres in the opener of a four-game set at Busch Stadium. Kyle Lohse (12-2) held San Diego to two runs on seven hits in seven innings for the Cardinals, who have won three of their last four overall. Lohse won his ninth straight decision, tying Arizona's Brandon Webb for the longest win streak in the majors this season. Ryan Franklin was rocky in the ninth but earned his 13th save. Joe Mather and Rick Ankiel also homered for the Cardinals. Edgar Gonzalez went 2-for-4, homered and scored two runs for the Padres, losers of three straight and four of their last five. Kevin Kouzmanoff went 2-for-3 and knocked in a run, while Chase Headley added a run-scoring double. Jake Peavy (7-6) allowed all four runs on eight hits in seven frames, striking out seven and walking none. The right-hander added a pair of hits in three at-bats.

Final Score: Colorado 5, Pittsburgh 3

Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Chris Iannetta clubbed a two-run homer and the Colorado Rockies overcame a shaky beginning from Ubaldo Jimenez to down the Pittsburgh Pirates, 5-3, in the opener of a four-game series at Coors Field. Iannetta added an RBI single for the Rockies, who snapped a four-game losing streak. Jeff Baker doubled twice and knocked in a run, while Garrett Atkins finished 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Jimenez (5-9) went seven innings and allowed three runs on five hits to pick up the win. The 24-year-old right-hander has won three of his last four starts. Paul Maholm (6-6) gave up five runs on eight hits and struck out seven to record his first lost since May 20 against Milwaukee. The lefty had won his last four decisions. Adam LaRoche had two-run double for Pittsburgh, which has dropped three of its last four games.
