Cards Purchase Phelps' Contract, Send Garcia Down

POSTED: 4:01 pm PDT August 27, 2008

(Sports Network) - The St. Louis Cardinals purchased the contract of first baseman Josh Phelps from Triple-A Memphis on Wednesday, and optioned pitcher Jaime Garcia to Memphis.

Phelps, 30, has not made a major league appearance since last season with Pittsburgh. He split 2007 between the Yankees and Pirates, batting .306 with seven home runs and 31 RBI in 94 games.

This season at Triple-A, Phelps batted .291 with 31 homers and 97 RBI in 126 games.

In 446 career games, Phelps owns a .273 batting average with 64 home runs and 243 RBI in stints with Toronto, Cleveland, Tampa Bay, the Yankees and Pirates.

Garcia has made 10 appearances -- one start -- this season, his first in the majors, and posted a 1-1 record with 5.63 ERA.

The Cardinals additionally transferred pitcher Mark Mulder to the 60-day disabled list.
