New Paternity Test Available On Store Shelves

Who’s your daddy? For anyone in doubt, the answer may lie at your neighborhood convenience store.

An over-the-counter DNA paternity test is on store shelves now, nationwide.

Three simple swabs and then send it off to the lab. Patients can get results in five days or less.

“Consumers should feel very confident that the results they get are very accurate and hopefully they are very helpful in answering questions pertaining to paternity," said Doug Fog, with Identigene.

Identigene’s paternity test was the first ever DNA test sold in retail stores. The creators say its 99.9% accurate.

Dr. Jane Dimer with Seattle’s Group Health says consumers beware. Sure, it’s an interesting alternative, but she questions the reliability.

“That’s a potential risk in terms of privacy,” said Dimer. "Is this a reliable predictor of the genetic map of where this person comes from or not?"

The paternity test is available at your neighborhood Rite Aid store. The kit costs about $20 and the lab test is an additional $120 dollars.
