Grocery Bag Fee May Go Before Voters

Posted: 7:35 am PDT August 26, 2008

Voters could decide whether Seattle will be able to charge shoppers 20 cents for every plastic or paper bag they use.

A group called the Coalition to Stop the Seattle Bag Tax said it has turned in more than enough signatures to put the issue to a vote.

Do you support a 20-cent fee for plastic bags to reduce waste?

Opponents are trying to stop the city from imposing the fee for each paper and plastic bag used by customers at grocery and drug stores.

At a Metropolitan Market on lower Queen Anne Hill, several people protested the signature gathering last week.

If enough signatures are validated by the County Elections office, the City Council will decide when to hold the vote.

It's already too late to make the November ballot but the issue could be before voters next summer.
