King County Council Restores Some Services Previously On Chopping Block

Departments of public health, public safety, and social services in King County all fared better than expected despite a $93 million budget cut approved for the county Friday.

King County Council members made adjustments in the county executive's plans in order to protect those priorities.

Council members restored about $10 million in cuts over all, finding the money in nooks and crannies of the $627 million budget.

One example is the Youth Eastside Services (YES) in Bellevue is where troubled children and their families come for help. The county council restored more than $200,000 that the county executive had cut from the YES budget for 2009.

The council restored money to operate the storefront sheriff's offices in unincorporated King County, to pay for major accident investigators, drug and mental health courts, public health centers, family planning clinics for nine months, and even the king county fair.

“I believe under the circumstances that we face this is a humane budget and it is certainly a responsible one,” said Larry Phillips-Budget Chair.

“We still will not be able to do the property crimes investigations that we've done in the past. We still will not be able to drug trafficking organization investigations,’ said King County Sheriff Sue Rahr.

The King County executive’s office said they are going along with the changes and will still maintain a balanced budget.
