Office Depot To Close 112 Stores

Company Plans To Open Fewer Stores In 2009

Office Depot said it will close 112 North American stores over the next three months and open fewer stores in 2009 in an effort to cut costs.

In a statement Wednesday, the company said an additional 14 stores will be closed through 2009 as their leases expire or other lease arrangements are finalized. The company plans to open only 20 new stores next year, down from the previous estimate of 40 stores.

The closures cut Office Depot store numbers in North America to 1,163. The stores to be closed are located in various geographic regions, including 45 in the Central U.S., 40 in the Northeast and Canada, 19 in the West and eight in the South.

Office Depot also plans to close six of its 33 distribution facilities in North America.

The Delray Beach, Fla.-based company will take related charges of $270 million to $300 million in 2008 and 2009.

The struggling office supply retailer considered store closings in October, when it reported a third-quarter loss due to slumping sales as consumers and small businesses cut back spending.
