Starbucks Redesigning Stores To Fit In Communities

Posted: 1:24 pm PDT June 25, 2009

Starbucks announced Thursday that it is redesigning their stores to fit into their respective communities.

Starbucks said the new design will reflect the store’s surrounding community, employ local workers and use materials that are reused or recycled.

Using their 1st Avenue and Pike Street location in Seattle as an example, Starbucks said the floor, ceiling, and columns were preserved from existing buildings. Also the wood cabinets in the store were repurposed from fallen trees in the Seattle area. See photo on Business Wire.

New company stores will utilize the new design and Starbucks said it will provide licensed stores and other business partners with design plans and guidance on construction.

"Our new design approach will allow customers to feel truly at home when visiting their local store and give them opportunities for discovery at our other locations around the world," said Arthur Rubinfeld, president, Starbucks Global Development.

Starbucks also has goals for energy and water conservation, recycling and green construction including making company-operated stores 25 percent more efficient by 2010 and to ensure 100 percent of cup supply will be reusable or recyclable by 2015.

Starbucks said the new design strategy is also at the Paris Disney Village store and is part of a renovated store in Seattle’s University Village opening in late June 2009.
