Chase Dropping Sponsorship Of July Fourth Fireworks

Posted: 5:54 pm PDT July 9, 2009Updated: 6:27 pm PDT July 9, 2009

Chase bank, the sponsor of the only big fireworks show left over downtown Seattle, said Thursday it won't pay for them again next year.

Before this past July Fourth, two fireworks shows would blast over Seattle at the same time, one over Elliott Bay and one over Lake Union.

This year, Ivars dropped its Elliott Bay show, leaving only the Chase Family Fourth fireworks over Lake Union.

Washington Mutual used to sponsor the fireworks, but when Chase took over, it agreed to continue WaMu’s sponsorship only for 2009. Chase confirmed Thursday that it is dropping its title sponsorship.

Executives for the Lake Union fireworks, a nonprofit organization called One Reel, said the show can't go on without a title sponsor.

One Reel won't say specifically how much the bank contributed, but executives said title sponsorships usually cost around a half-million dollars.

“It's a great way to spend the Fourth of July. It means a lot to me. I think it would be sad to see it go,” said spectator Becky Weinz.

One Reel executives said they're working to find a new title sponsor who can afford the contribution. They said they really need one in place by the end of the year in order to go ahead with next year's show.
