CHICAGO -- This could come under the heading of "looking for love in all the wrong places," but there's a lot of dating going on in the workplace.

CareerBuilder.com's annual office romance survey found that about half of workers said they have dated a co-workers.

And it isn't just among peers.

Twenty-one percent of workers admitted they have dated their boss, up from just 14 percent last year.

Nearly four in 10 said they have dated someone with a higher position in their organization.

In some cases, it pays off in terms of advancement.

Twenty-five percent of men who dated the boss said the relationship helped move their careers forward. Only 13 percent of women said that.

CareerBuilder.com noted that dating in the office can have drawbacks.

"Policies on office romance vary from company to company, and it's the responsibility of the worker to know where their employer stands," said Rosemary Haefner, a spokeswoman for CareerBuilder.com. "It's important to remember that even if both sides are willing participants, office relationships could have repercussions."

CareerBuilder.com said 10 percent of the people it surveyed said they were asked to leave their job because of an office romance.

In addition, a breakup can make the workplace uncomfortable, to say the least.

The survey found that co-workers said they were most likely to couple up while working together on a project, with 22 percent of workers saying their relationships began that way.

Here are the other top situations where office romances found their spark, according to CareerBuildercom.

• Running into each other randomly outside work (11 percent)
• Happy hour (10 percent)
• Love at first sight (8 percent)
• At lunch (8 percent)
• Working late-night together (7 percent)

CareerBuilder said it surveyed more than 2,050 workers for its office romance poll.
