Contractor Dismantles Crane In Bellevue

Friday, December 1, 2006 – updated: 3:18 pm PST December 1, 2006

A contractor is dismantling a construction crane in Bellevue because small cracks were found during an inspection.

Bellevue city officials asked the state Department of Labor and Industries to inspect all cranes in the area after a 210-foot crane operated by a different contractor collapsed on Nov. 16 and crashed into several buildings, killing Microsoft lawyer Matthew Ammon, 31. Investigators are trying to determine whether that crane's unusual base design and visible tilt in the days before the accident were the cause.

The corner of 108th Avenue Northeast and Northeast 10th Street was closed Friday as another crane was set up to begin taking down the 200-foot crane that was being used to build a 20-story luxury apartment building at 1020 108th Ave. N.E.

Cracks were found on four vertical posts of the crane's frame, a representative of Hanover Construction told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News.

As a precaution, workers were sent home Thursday, and residents in neighboring condo buildings were immediately told about the situation and told that they could voluntarily evacuate if they felt unsafe.

Monitors watched the crane overnight to make certain it remained upright.
