SEATTLE -- An old chapel in Seattle's Discovery Park has become an unlikely focus of controversy because of what are inside: rabbits. The old Fort Lawton chapel was saved from the wrecking ball, but it's not operating as a church. Instead it is a sanctuary for rabbits.
The rabbits were rounded up at Seattle's Woodland Park, which for years has been a dumping ground for unwanted pet bunnies which breed and burrow, damaging the park."It's still a church. It's still a house of God," said Margart Bergsagel, who thinks it's wrong to use the chapel as a rabbit hutch. However, Tom McKoy of the American Legion has no problem with it."I went to this chapel as a church when I was in the service here and it doesn't affect me a bit," he said. The parks department is overseeing this rabbit rescue. Dozens of bunnies are kept there in the chapel before and after their spay and neutering operations.About 150 rabbits are expected to be cycled through this church before the end of April.
