Mystery Surrounds Death Of Tumwater Man

Monday, February 12, 2007 – updated: 9:01 am PST February 12, 2007

An autopsy today may determine the cause of death for a Tumwater man whose body was found in the back of his pickup truck at an impound yard, the result of an apparent homicide, police said.

Jerry Totten, 69, of Tumwater, was reported missing Saturday by relatives, and police then learned that his pickup had been impounded near Shelton, police Detective Jennifer Kolb said.

Thurston County sheriff's deputies went to the impound yard, searched the vehicle and found Totten in the covered bed of the truck, Kolb said Sunday.

The truck was first found abandoned on Old Olympic Highway, but at the time there was no indication it was tied to a crime.

It sat in the tow lot for 11 days. After the victim's relatives reported him missing, police checked the bed of the truck and found his body.

A tow company dispatcher told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News the body was covered in garbage.

Police were pursuing leads that he was killed in something other than a random crime, Kolb said.

Neighbors and acquaintances told The Seattle Times that Totten apparently lived alone and kept old cars and other junk in his yard. A former neighbor, Joe Akin, 55, said Totten was a loner and packrat.

"The guy was a mystery," Akin said.
