Couple Accused Of Killing Baby With Adult Medications

A couple from Shelton is accused of killing their baby boy by giving the 6-month-old a combination of adult over-the-counter medicine during a trip to San Diego last October, police said.

Thomas Boettger, the baby's father, appeared in a King County court on Thursday after he was arrested in Seattle on a $1 million child abuse warrant, KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reported.

Police said to soothe the baby's upset stomach, Boettger crushed adult medications including Mylanta, Unisom, Zantac, Benadryl and Sudafed, mixed the medications with water and gave it to the baby in a bottle.

"The child, from what we know at this point, was given prescription drugs or over-the-counter drugs and was overmedicated to the point of death," said Capt. Lawrence McKinney of the San Diego Police Department.

Investigators said Boettger told them he was an emergency medical technician and that it would have taken too many days to get the baby in to see a doctor.

"At some point in the investigation, they became uncooperative and unresponsive and subsequently left their home and (we) weren't able to find them," McKinney said.

Investigators said they believe the death is a homicide because of the family's history, but they did not release additional details.
