New Program Keeps Tabs On Teen Drivers

Seattle parents will be among the first in the country to try a new program by Seattle-based Safeco Insurance that tells parents when their teen driver speeds, breaks curfew or drives outside of a designated area, reported KIRO 7 Eyewitness News.

Safeco said its new program will encourage teens to drive responsibly while giving parents piece of mind that their child will be safe while driving.

The program, called Teensurance, is the first to combine multiple safety features in one program aimed at preventing teen deaths.

The plan includes roadside assistance and the ability to let parents unlock a car from a remote location should the keys get locked inside. Parents can also use Internet and global-positioning satellites to locate their car.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 16-year-olds have a higher accident rate than drivers of any other age and car crashes remain the leading cause of death for teens in the United States.
